"Education is the sail that casts the winds of hope," says Dr. Steve Perry. Education was the topic of conversation Monday night as Dr. Perry lectured to Lander students about the education crisis in African-American communities. Dr. Perry's lecture focused on the structure of the education system, as well as the family structure, within the African American community. Dr. Perry knows the struggle because he was once a part of it. He believes, and stresses, that the disadvantaged African American communities stem from one thing; inadequate schools. He also urges for change within the structure of the American school systems and proposes new education options that cater to all school-aged children. As the Principal and creator of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Perry's school is in session year round, and focuses on transforming disadvantaged children into successful scholars through discipline and structure. The school offers college preparatory classes and has a 100% graduation rate. In addition, Dr. Perry shared his personal experiences growing up as a disadvantaged individual, and how he did not accept things the way they were. Those personal experiences shaped him into the person he is today. "We have to want more for ourselves," says Dr. Perry. Dr. Perry is the author of several books including his most notable work, Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us. He is currently working on a fourth piece which is anticipated to come out next spring.
