In these hard economic times cutbacks are all around us. Public education, which is state funded, has taken a hard hit to say the least because of the current crisis. With the situation going from bad to worse more and more responsibilities are being put on the teachers at public school around the nation.
Alpha Tau Omega fraternity recently completed a year-long fundraiser aimed at collecting recyclable paper and distributing it to local schools in the vicinity of the Lander University campus. The program, “Paper for Pupils,” was directed by Alpha Tau Omega’s Social Service Chairman, Heath Smith. “We couldn’t have had a more successful event, we collected 519 pounds of paper! Without all the help from brothers and the Greenwood community this wouldn’t have been possible,” said Heath Smith.
Members of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity positioned the recycle boxes all around Lander’s campus and around the Greenwood community. The program was started in October of 2008 and was completed almost exactly a year later, in October of 2009. “Paper for Pupils” was just a portion of Alpha Tau Omega’s community and philanthropy work.
Blake Parker comment, ”Paper for pupils was a great experience me. I look forward to and anticipate the next chance that we as an organization get to help others.”
The lucky schools to receive the recycled paper were Hodges Elementary and the Greenwood Early Childhood Development Center. Each school received eight boxes stacked full of paper and the representatives from the school were more than happy to accept the donations from the fraternity.
“We were just glad to help. In a time of economic downturn everyone needs to come together and help the community. I believe this was a successful event and we look forward to more events like this in the future,” said Connor Parker, President of Alpha Tau Omega.
