Men's Basketball Beats UNC Pembroke for First PBC Win

With four players scoring in double figures, the Lander Bearcats snap their 5-game losing streak and earn their first win in conference beating UNC Pembroke, 69-51 at Horne Arena on Wednesday night.  

 

Tovi Bailey led Lander by scoring 14 points, Greg Smalls contributed 12 points, and Antonio Pope and Dane Sparrow each scored 10 points.  The Bearcats started quick with an 8-0 run, but Pembroke came back within one at three different times in the first half.  But Lander responded to the challenge and pulled away with a 9-2 run to close the half.

 

In the second half, Lander increased the lead to fifteen, 40-25, with 16:20 remaining.  After a 7-0 run from the Braves, the Bearcats answered with a 5-0 run of their own.  Though both teams shot poorly from the free throw line, Lander with 14 of 30 (47 percent) and Pembroke 9 of 18 (50 percent), Kevin Kelley shot 4-4 in the final minute and a half to close out the victory.

 

Lander evened the series after losing at UNC Pembroke in December, 68-78.  With the win, Lander is 6-8, 1-5 while UNC Pembroke fall 6-8, 1-4. 

 

Lander shot 25 of 53 from the floor (47 percent) and 5 of 13 from the three-point range (39 percent).  UNC Pembroke finish with 19 of 58 from the floor (33 percent) and 4 from 19 behind the arc (21 percent).
